Located in Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo belongs to the list of largest and most growing zoos in the world. Today, it has over 800 species of more than 4,000 animals. It also belongs in the list of zoos in the world that houses the giant panda, a bear native to central-western and south western China. It is privately managed by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego. 

Exhibits at the San Diego Zoo are usually designed around a particular habitat. Ranging from an African rain forest to the Arctic taiga and tundra, various exhibits are natural-looking with hard-to-see wires and darkened blinds (to view birds), and pools and open-air moats (for big mammmals). Some of the exhibits include the Monkey Trails and Forrest Tales, Panda Research Station, the Polar Bear Plunge and Elephant Odyssey. Here, you will see two of the New Guinea singing dogs and the orangutan named Ken Allen. 

This year, San Diego Zoo will celebrate the Garden Festival! Owners of Del Mar homes will have the chance to see the zoo's 7000 plants and gain knowledge how these amazing edibles feed and nurture human beings and animals.

Chris Mirguet, the Zoo's executive chief, will present samples of healthy recipes he developed incorporating locally sourced ingredients. Inside the entrance, owners of Del Mar homes will be amazed by "plants," which are really slinky stilt walkers in disguise. Children will be pleased by a plant-themed scavenger hunt, a Dr. Zoolittle show, and the Zoo's costumed characters. There will be booths in the zoo that will provide information about urban gardens.

Visitors can book special horticulture tours, along with one that will permit them to feed some of the Zoo's botanical bounty to their animals!

The San Diego sport-fishing fleet operates out of San Diego Bay and offers the most varied choice of trips found anywhere in the world. With the season open year around. The fishing grounds and targeted species will vary according to the time of year but there is always a trophy to go after. Below is sampling of the types of trips that are offered:

• "Open Party" trips are regularly scheduled trips for which individual tickets are available for purchase. "Limited Load" refers to open party trips which carry 25% to 50% fewer passengers than their Open Party equivalents. Advance reservations are recommended on all trips. Departure times may very.
• Half Day Fishing -  These are very popular and usually are five to six hour trips that fish the coastline from Imperial Beach to the Point Loma Kelp Beds according to the "best bite".  Summer & Fall Fishing seasons target yellowtail, bass, barracuda, bonito and flurries of tuna. Winter & Spring Fishing Seasons target yellowtail, sandbass, rockfish, sheephead, sculpin, white seabass & barracuda. Boats offering these trips do not have sleeping accommodations but do have full food service. 
• 3/4 Day Fishing - Thiese trips usually run nine to ten hours. Targeted fishing grounds include the Coronado Islands - which lie 14 miles south of San Diego in Mexican waters, the Baja Coast and offshore banks. When fishing in Mexican waters, a Mexican fishing license is included in the fare. Spring, summer and fall trips target Yellowtail, White Sea Bass, Calico Bass, Barracuda and Bonito. Winter trips target Sand Bass, Rock Cod and over 50 fifty species of bottom fish.
• Private Charters can be arranged for any size group and can be customized to suit your needs.

The charter fishing boats usually obtain all of the necessary permits and privide the gear needed.  On the boats ging out for a half day ar longer they will almost always have a full galley open.

One of the great advantages of living in a La Jolla home is the chance to spend some time on the water catching a trophy fish or just dinner.

In the 1930's America was in the midst of the Depression.  Its effects were felt everywhere including Del Mar. However, in 1933, eight members of the 22nd Agricultural District had a envisioned a county fairgrounds located in the small seaside town of Del Mar.  This one vision set set in motion the actions that have created town we have today. These eight visionaries purchased the current site with a $25,000 grant from the State Department of Fairs & Expositions. The first county fair was held in October 1936. Even before the first fair was held, plans were being made for the addition of a racetrack.  To the fairgrounds this would be an asset that would make the fairgrounds self-sufficient. Because of its close proximity to Los Angles, the climate, and seclusion the area offered, film stars were frequent visitors to the area. Among them was Bing Crosby, a racing enthusiast,who became instrumental in the development of the Del Mar Racetrack. Bing Crosby and the fair board agreed on a lease arrangement with the newly created Del Mar Turf Club for $35,000. Serving on the Turf Club's first Board of Directors was Bing Crosby as President, Pat O'Brien as Vice President, with Oliver Hardy, Joe E. Brown, Gary Cooper, Leo McCary and others serving on the executive boards. Through the years the horse racing in Del Mar has brought people from all over the world to watch the finest horses compete.  With the Clubs growth came growth to the town of Del Mar.  Situated along the pacific coast, Del Mar offered horse enthusiasts the best of all worlds, world class horses, perfect weather, and an ocean to play in.  All this while remaining close to two great cities San Diego and Los Angeles.  Today Del Mar still retains its secluded charm and offers people the opportunity to live like Gary Cooper or Bing Crosby.  If you want the best in life look to make your home in Del Mar.
