Mountain Lion Avoidance - Del Mar Real Estate

Owners of Del Mar real Estate enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Coast and often venture into the mountains for a day of hiking or mountain biking.  The mountains are beautiful, but they are also wild. The territories where many wild animals live bring dangers most people do not think about.  A male mountain lion measure 8 feet long and weighs 130 to 150 pounds. Female cats measure 7 feet long and weigh 65 to 90 pounds.  Everyone entering this terrain must remember that their safety is dependant on an awareness and knowledge of these dangers.  Southern California has repeated been in the news for mountain lion attacks along some of these frequently used mountain trails.  Human encounters with mountain lions is increasing for many factors such as  construction in native habitat areas,  destruction of habitat due to the recent wildfires,  and increased use of their habitat for recreation.  The following steps will help you enjoy the wild outdoors while minimizing the risk of an encounter with a mountain lion.

  1. Hike in groups, and stick close together.
  2. Keep children close to adults.
  3. Talk as you move along a trail.
  4. Take note of unusual bird or wildlife activity.
  5. If possible do not bring your pet dog with you into lion country,  If you do make sure it is on a leash

If you encounter a mountain lion, avoid arousing their predatory instincts:

  1. Do not run or turn your back on the animal.
  2. Do not crouch down or bend over.
  3. Pick up young children.
  4. Raise your arms and try to appear large.
  5. Speak firmly in a loud, deep voice.
